It's very interesting to me how new songs find their way into the world. Sometimes they're the result of hours of agonizing over an idea, a lyric, or finding the perfect melody to convey a feeling you wish to express. Others start out as a cool lick you recorded on your cell phone and carried around for months (or even years) until the day you came up with a cool way to use it. Still other times(and I love those times!), a song just drops out of the sky, with a melody and/or lyrics that are virtually complete when they first come to you. It's like they write themselves and then tap you on the shoulder to tell you they need to be played. At practice last night, we worked up a brand new tune that was one of those "dropped from the sky" songs. It first appeared during a recent camping trip to northern Michigan, when I woke up at 3:30 in the morning with this song playing in my head. It just kept repeating over and over until it finally convinced me to write it all down so I wouldn't forget. I even wrote out a description of what it sounded like, just in case I might lose the whole idea. Now, fast forward to last night's Fossil Creek Band practice. After describing it to everyone, and playing through it a few times, I was totally amazed that what I was hearing sounded exactly like it had sounded in my head that night in the camper. It was a very strange but also very enjoyable moment indeed! A good share of that, I'm sure, is a direct result of the amazing abilities of the folks I play music with. They picked up, almost immediately, what that song wanted to sound like. In that moment, the song was officially born! Now, don't get me wrong here. It may not even be a great song, and In the big scheme of things this moment probably has no significance at all. But, for me, it was a very enjoyable moment, and one that I thought I should share with you.
